Big, beautiful immigration

By Steve Woodward

You need not be a golf aficionado to appreciate J.J. Spaun’s path to victory in the 125th U.S. Open on June 15, 2025, Father’s Day.

He made four birdies down the stretch on a brutally unforgiving Oakmont Country Club course and secured his first major championship by rolling a 64-foot putt across a soggy 18th green into the heart of the cup.

Spaun, 34, has toiled, largely in obscurity, on pro golf tours for more than a decade. His is a familiar story across the generations: an average couple finds themselves raising a child who catches “the bug” and never looks back.

In the Spaun family, J.J. is a fourth generation American with Filipino and Mexican roots. None of the adults in Spaun’s life asked for anything other than opportunities. And they embraced them to build a life near Los Angeles. His mother, Dollie, worked as an office manager. His father, John, was a hospital administrator. Both are recreational golfers. (According to Golf Week magazine, while pregnant with J.J., Dollie continued playing golf through the eighth month).

While this likely will be Spaun’s breakthrough season – he was co-leader of The Players Championship in May before losing to Rory McIlroy in a playoff – he has demonstrated that he is a closer. He won a tournament on the Korne Ferry Tour (golf’s professional minor league) and also scored a win on the PGA Canada Tour. Spaun has recorded 43 top ten finishes (and amassed more than $22 million in career earnings).

Spaun also is a college graduate. He was a four-year member of the golf team at San Diego State University, where he graduated in 2012.

Away from the rigors of pro golf Spaun cherishes fatherhood. He and his wife, Melody, were married in 2019 and are raising two daughters (photo nearby).

One of Spaun’s great grandfathers immigrated (legally) from the Philippines to California, where Spaun’s grandfather was born – a story repeated on countless occasions throughout America’s history. People arrive on our shores from every corner of the world, not to pursue fame and fortune, but to pursue a better life on a foundation of economic stability, accessible healthcare options and educational opportunities.

Occasionally one of these families hits the jackpot. A son becomes a millionaire pro golfer. A daughter finds stardom on the stage or screen. A grandchild launches a small business that becomes an empire.

J.J. Spaun was only one of the weekend’s big stories tied to Los Angeles. It is a distinctly American story. And it is a story in stark contrast to the frenzied, unhinged violence that is decimating the streets of downtown Los Angeles (and other cities).

The media report that L.A. rioters are protesting President Trump’s “immigration crackdown”, as if to infer that a coordinated effort to detain and deport migrants is targeting people like J.J. Spaun’s great grandfather.

To the contrary, millions of undocumented, unprocessed criminals who surged across the U.S.-Mexico border after Joe Biden’s regime seized power by leveraging China’s Covid-19 bioweapon did not enter our homeland to track down the best golf instructors. They’re not being bussed and flown into communities because there are plenty of empty seats in classrooms and beds in emergency rooms. They are not taking online civics courses to begin their journey toward legal American citizenship.

Many of the aliens were criminals in their countries of origin. They are not here to turn the page and leverage second chances. They are here to commit more crimes. Consider a partial roster of illegal migrants detained by a single June 2025 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in Los Angeles:

Cuong Chanh Phan, 49, Vietnam (Criminal history: Second-degree murder)

Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, 55, Philippines. (Criminal history: Burglary in Ontario, Calif.; sexual penetration with a foreign object with force and assault with intent to commit rape in Pomona, Calif., sentenced to 37 years in prison)

Armando Ordaz, 44, Mexico. (Criminal history: Sexual battery in Los Angeles; receiving known or stolen property in Norwalk, Calif.; petty theft in Los Angeles)

Victor Mendoza-Aguilar (photo nearby), 32, Mexico. (Criminal history: Possessing unlawful paraphernalia in Pasadena, Calif.: possessing controlled substances in Pasadena; assault with a deadly weapon: not firearm in Pasadena; obstructing a public officer in Pasadena)

Jordan Mauricio Meza-Esquibel, 32, Honduras. (Criminal history: Distribution of heroin and cocaine; domestic violence)

It strains every thread of logic we can muster to comprehend how anyone opposes detainment and deportation of thugs such as these. And yet the riots rage on in Los Angeles.

We began with a sports reference. Here is another. Los Angeles is scheduled to host eight soccer matches during the 2026 World Cup next summer. Los Angeles is the host city of the 2028 Olympic Games. At what point should those designations be reconsidered?

Dunces 2.0

By Steve Woodward

Amid my eternal quest to understand the deranged Left in 2025, a long-forgotten book title jarred my feeble brain as I inhaled the longleaf pine-infused air on a Spring evening.

“The Confederacy of Dunces”, published in 1980, was written in the late 1960s by an iconoclast named John Kennedy O’Toole.

“The novel offended the progressive sensibilities of publishers based in New York,” wrote historian Auguste Meyrat in 2024. “It took a fellow writer from Louisiana, Walker Percy, to agree to read the manuscript and advocate for the book’s publication nearly a decade after Toole committed suicide.”

And what happened next? The book was declared to be a literary classic. And what did it, and central character Ignatius C. Reilly, reveal that resonates today?

“There’s a whole generation of Ignatius’s today: vain, overeducated young adults who can’t hold a job, live healthily, own any property, or maintain a friendship or romantic partnership, and yet often feel proud of themselves,” writes Meyrat. “Like Ignatius, they feel qualified to deliver their opinion on a whole range of issues they have no clue about. Without a doubt, if Ignatius existed today, he would likely be an online influencer hosting a popular YouTube channel or podcast.”

Ignatius is the poster boy for today’s Democrats, in other words. Their narratives, compliantly advanced by an ever more corrupt media, never have been more absurd, or delusional. We need to call them out for what they are. Dunces. Consider:

Tariffs are imploding the economy to permit a few Trump cronies to short the stock markets and make billions. (The tariffs are, in fact, causing a flurry of requests for Oval Office visits and phone calls by freaked-out foreign leaders knowing the gig is up).

The economy is teetering (but never mind the easing of inflation as reflected by the March consumer price index).

The deportation of illegal immigrants tied to murderous gangs is just a pretext in a grand scheme to mass deport American citizens. (If true, start with Hunter Biden).

The Department of Government Efficiency ultimately plans to dismantle Social Security and Medicare to deprive American citizens of their “God-given” entitlements. (False, but at least DOGE will end Social Security payments to the deceased).

Luigi Mangione, who shot a UnitedHealthcare CEO in cold blood, is a brave martyr and, damn, he’s handsome, too. (Who knew the steely eyes of a crazed killer are a turn-on?)

Karmelo Anthony had to carry a knife to a Texas high school track competition and stab a fellow teenager in the chest because, like every black teen amid confrontation, an unarmed white kid is intent on killing him. (Media spin: the dead kid is not the victim).

Every business venture that became wildly successful under Elon Musk, especially electric vehicle production and space travel, is a threat to democracy and reminiscent of pre-World War II Germany. (And Trump is Hitler because if you repeat it often enough …)

Trump’s mass deportations are cruel and astonishing Executive branch overreach. And unprecedented. (Except Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden deported millions of illegal immigrants without inspiring one court injunction or Supreme Court intervention).

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is a “Maryland man” who was deported to an El Salvadoran prison by a heartless Department of Homeland Security. He should be returned immediately to his wife and three children because he committed no crimes on U.S. soil.

(Entering the U.S. illegally 14 years ago was/is a crime. Maintaining ties to the notorious MS-13 gang – evidenced by Garcia’s identifying tattoos — poses a threat to Marylanders. And only a feckless Federal Bureau of Investigation spared Garcia from arrest and charges after he was pulled over for speeding in Tennessee in December 2022 with eight passengers in tow from Texas. They presented IDs showing the same home address but traveled without a single piece of luggage. Say it with me: human trafficking).

Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D) flew to El Salvador to score a photo op with Garcia (photo nearby), knowing there was no possibility he would be freed. But it turns out Van Hollen is not the most deranged among the apologists for thuggish gang members living in our homeland illegally.

A New Mexico magistrate judge was arrested and has been banned from the bench for life after homeland security officers raided his Las Cruces home, responding to a tip about who was living in the judge’s guest house. In March, officers arrested Venezuelan illegal immigrant Christhian Lopez-Ortega, 23, in the home of Judge Jose Cano, a Democrat. The Tren de Aragua gang member had been living with the judge’s family after his wife hired Lopez-Ortega to perform several home improvement chores.

The judge and his wife were said to be complicit in allowing their immigrant house guest to handle household firearms.

And what is the fate of the “adopted” Venezuelan? Another Democrat judge overturned his bail and suggested Lopez-Ortega be returned to the custody of his fellow judge because they, the two Dem judges, are friends. He remains detained while a hearing to decide the gang member’s fate is pending.

Did John Kennedy O’Toole contemplate dunces as extreme and pathetic as these? In 2025, who is the dunce? The illegal thug or the New Mexico judge? China’s hijacking of the U.S. economy or Trump’s overdue tariffs? Deported illegals or politicians who coddle them? The healthcare CEO assassin or the dead CEO? A knife wielding high school punk or his dead, unarmed victim?

Waiting.

Seriously?

By Steve Woodward

Functioning as a speechwriter for the Harris “campaign” must deliver quite a power trip. Her writers apparently have tremendous leeway. They toggle freely between fiction and surreality.

Consider this gem: “Donald Trump is an unserious man.”

This was delivered during her speech at the Marxist’s National Convention in Chicago, a.k.a., Gaza West, where armed security lined streets and storefronts were adorned with plywood.

Unlike much of what comes coursing out of her mouth, this one actually merits closer attention.

While Joe Biden found his calling as an entrenched Washington Democrat, a two-term vice president serving the most anti-Constitution, pro-socialism American president in history, and a public servant who betrayed his country (aided by his man-child son, Hunter) by selling access and influence to foreign adversaries in exchange for no less than $27 million, what was Mr. Unserious doing?

Trump built a commercial development empire, rolled out a golf resort business that has no rival (even Charlotte Democrats sneak out to play Trump National), and became the host of a 14-season, highly profitable NBC reality TV program.

And what do you know, he even delivered an encore. In 2017, Trump was elected President of the United States after which he pursued a seriously focused agenda that delivered desirable outcomes for millions of Americans and our foreign allies. Seriously. The 45th president in a nutshell.

More specifically, Americans witnessed a precipitous decline in the cost of fuel at the pumps (photo nearby, March 2020) and energy in their homes. Black and Hispanics citizens were employed at record levels hitting half-century highs. They held real jobs driving a robust economy during which inflation dipped as low as 1.9%. Serious results.

Around the world, Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un and Iran’s ruling clerics apparently viewed Trump’s America First stance as a serious deterrent, not a campaign slogan. Mexican leaders apparently found Trump’s demands to reduce chaos at the U.S. southern border compelling. He threatened to impose tariffs. Mexico got the message quickly. Collaboration between U.S. border patrol agents and their counterparts restored order. Serious results.

When immigrants flood our homeland the result is deadly serious. The media defaults to cover-up mode to protect the regime. But young women dying at the hands of murderous illegal thugs — Laken Riley in Georgia, Rachel Morin in Maryland, two among many — did not go unnoticed. Joe Biden, coddled and sheltered, naturally miscalculated public sentiment. When he tried to say Riley’s name — on the fly in the State of the Union speech — he mispronounced it. What is worse than unserious? Unrepentant? Unmoved?

The Biden-Harris White House era will be recorded by historians as a dark epoch littered by the carnage of cultural decline and measurable suffering.

It adds up to one large snowball of unserious. Since the earliest days of 2021, willful neglect of the U.S. southern border has seen no fewer than 10 million (likely more) unvetted illegals surge into the homeland, including unknown throngs of terrorists.

By conspiring with a mafia of pharmaceutical profit vultures and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta/Facebook, military careers, family run businesses and the health of young adults were destroyed by Biden-Harris COVID jab mandates.

Persistent inflation gutted the economy and household savings, aggregating to more than 19%. Gas prices spiked in all 50 states, crippling motorists, shipping and the travel industry. Unemployment climbed to nine percent. The aftermath finds people crushed by record high consumer debt.

With Harris at his side, Biden retreated as Russia advanced into Ukraine, and Hamas terrorists descended into Israel, exacting an initial death toll of more than 1,200. With Harris at his side, Biden unconscionably ordered a calamitous exit from the U.S.-owned Bagram airbase in Afghanistan three years ago, costing 13 American soldiers their lives, abandoning billions of dollars worth of military assets and reopening a terrorism training ground.

Serious coordination was required to conceal the steady decline of Biden’s mental acuity. A vice president conspiring with a First Lady, members of Congress and media acolytes to hoard power and torture a feeble old man is betrayal. That’s more than serious. That’s Satanic.

An unserious Secret Service detail assigned to Donald Trump’s campaign created conditions for the unthinkable — a bullet traveling toward the back of his head on July 13, 2024. That one missed. Another obliterated a Pennsylvania father and husband. His name is Corey Comperatore. Like so many deceased victims of Biden-Harris, it will not be read aloud from a teleprompter.

Chicago is fading from memory, and even unserious pollsters are failing to manufacture a Kamala surge as the convulsions of a scripted, sterile convention yield to the revulsion Harris and her running mate, the Mandarin Marxist of Minnesota, engender.

That deepening revulsion has inspired a roster of full-blown serious to mobilize behind Trump. Elon Musk. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. And a former Democrat member of Congress, U.S. Army Reserves Lieutenant Col. Tulsi Gabbard (photo nearby).

Kennedy’s relatives are not taking this well. In a statement, they lament Bobby Kennedy’s “betrayal”, expressing support for the Harris ticket’s “shared vision of a brighter future” and “economic promise”.

Unserious Donald seems to have unhinged and unraveled a Democrat dynasty relegated with its lesser heirs — the Carters, Clintons and Obamas — to the obscurity of history’s ash heap.

Domestic jihad

By Steve Woodward

It was striking that Election Day and Veterans’ Day fell 72 hours apart last week. Both events, one a duty, the other a sacred observance, have reliably and boldly reflected American priorities and values across the years.

There was indeed much to celebrate among values-based conservatives after November 8, Election Day 2022. There was much for which to be thankful and sobered on November 11, Veterans’ Day.

In Moore County, the conservative values wave sent the left crashing into the jagged rocks of irrelevance. Voters overwhelmingly chose morality and stewardship when offered the alternative – cultural secularism and reckless spending. More on these triumphs later. Let’s simply say that where public schools and the Moore County Board of Education are concerned the status quo rubber stamp has been placed permanently in a drawer, and citizens who attend future meetings can rest assured they will not be subjected to metal detectors, masks, and intimidation by security personnel.

But the bigger picture is disheartening, and not for reasons about which the corrupt mainstream media would dare pontificate.

Two examples. Republicans did not seize iron clad majorities in the U.S. House and Senate because they ran too many tainted, Trump-backed “election denier” candidates who are not, and never will be, electable. BS.

Are we to accept this absurd notion even as The Big Steal 2.0 plays out before our eyes in Arizona, California, Nevada and Oregon? Election integrity is taking another hit out West, where “officials” are complacent and, likely, complicit.

The Left is not a wing of the Democrat party in 2022. The Left IS the Democrat party. Its candidates and its voters are not fixated on the so-called insurrection of January 6, 2021. Their fixation is abortion on demand, climate change, LBGTQ rights and gender fluidity. They do not care about our “institutions”, and they are not Never Trumpers. They barely noticed Trump because they never cared about low unemployment, peace through strength abroad, energy independence and restoring the greatness of America. Trump’s foe was and is corporate-owned media.

We can no more understand the radical Left than can we understand that which drives Islamic jihadists to commit acts of unthinkable terror. But we must acknowledge what drives them to vote, what inclines them to go all-in for John Fetterman (PA), Gretchen Witmer (MI), Mark Kelly (AZ), et al, allies of the Left who have no obvious popular appeal.

Senator-elect John Fetterman (D-PA)

It’s not about ideology. They have no ideology. They have a religion that is untethered from Christianity, or even common sense. Common sense tells us that citizens of all political stripes would reject unbridled inflation, rising urban crime spreading into formerly “safe” neighborhoods, energy dependence on our enemies and crippling prices for gasoline and heating oil, a military significantly weakened by vaccine mandates, and endless January 6 commissions that crucify Trump but seek no remedies for election fraud.

Second example. It is the default mode among Americans of a certain generation to honor and salute military veterans. But the aforementioned Left views the military industrial complex, alive and well, as a channel through which wokeness and transgenderism will be further engrained. Thus, we honor our veterans one day a year but, should we lose focus, we will witness the demise of the brotherhoods that sustained them in times of war and peace. The Left is in charge in the upper ranks. The faces of valor they see in the black-and-white photos from past World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, leave them cold. They are not moved by these men and women who fought unconditionally. The woke military brass of the 21st Century prefers conditions for those who serve. They must be vaccinated, indoctrinated, and emancipated from the past. Duty is not inherent; it is irrelevant. Duty gets in the way.

Savor we must the victories gained this first week in November that will subdue the march of the Left. Treasure we must military valor of ages past. But the stark reality of this moment is that we no longer can take for granted the absolute certainty of Election Day “results”, or the sanctity of future missions of those sworn to defend our homeland from enemies foreign and domestic.

In fact, domestic enemies are thriving in a perpetual open season, and they know it.

Cowering like it’s 2020

By Steve Woodward

Our kids now can go to school, free as birds, but only if smothered beneath unsanitary masks, and pumped full of experimental serum, to protect them from, at worst, a chest cold.

Our kids conversely are made to stay home from school because three inches of snow that has melted into residual clumps makes traveling by bus potentially hazardous, or so say our unelected authorities. What’s next, a Dry Pavement Alert? A Blue Sky Glare Advisory? Fresh Air Delirium Syndrome?

If I am a school age child in 2022, what is my default mode? Bold individualism endowed upon me by the fortitude of the American spirit?  Or, am I a bowl of jello, quivering in fear of disease and Mother Nature?

The answer is obvious and it is the latter. Sponge Bob and his sidekicks are in charge. Our children are gelatinous beings, trained to recoil whenever the ruling elite or weather forecasters proclaim foreboding doom.

But don’t blame the kids. The fault lies firmly at the feet of a group now passing as “adults”. There was a Greatest Generation, those who fought in, died during and emerged from World War II to forge an even greater America. But here in the 21st Century, we are stuck with the Gravest Generation, a class of citizenry best described as weak, self-absorbed, delusional and lost.

They existed among us for who knows how long but have been exposed by the hysteria imposed upon normal day to day life by the Wuhan Virus that escaped a U.S.-funded laboratory in China in 2019.

And we are understanding that it is all but impossible to marginalize these most un-American of Americans because they are put forward by corporate, mainstream media as normal, rational Americans who just want every citizen to “stay safe”.  Even small-town newspapers are trying to show how “woke” they are, just like their highly paid brethren in the prestige media outlets in New York and Washington.

In its January 23 editorial, The Pilot issued an impassioned plea to the rubes it calls readers: Do your part to curb COVID! The premise for yet another frenzied treatment of the topic is that “there is virtually no aspect of life that isn’t being affected these days by COVID-19 and its highly contagious Omicron variant.” And if we don’t return to crackdown mode we will be blindsided when, inevitably, the next variant “comes along”. This warning raises suspicion that The Pilot must have access to Anthony Fauci’s emails.

Listen up, insists The Pilot (specifically, editor John Nagy and his staff death-watcher, Jamie Baxley), “we owe it to everyone around us to do what we can to safeguard public health.” The Pilot essentially is calling for another round of lockdowns. Virtual classrooms. No church services. No elective surgeries in hospitals. Take-out only restaurants. Vaccine passports. And testing, testing, testing of asymptomatic mass murderers, our children.

But public opinion is turning. Despite the best efforts of the county health department and school board to quell their optimism, determined Moore County citizens trekked to Washington on January 23 to join thousands assembled across the National Mall for a “Defeat The Mandates” rally. A lean, mean machine known as Freedom Matters NC, formed in 2020 by Lydia Boesch and Mitch Lancaster, held its banner high in frigid DC. The mandates are going down.

Freedom is making a comeback, and it really ticks off the Left. Just when absolute tyranny was beginning to feel normal. At least to them. (A reporter at Joe Biden’s marathon stumble-fest January 21 actually asked what the President would say to parents “frustrated that there is no vaccine for children under 5?” By all means, let’s inject the least vulnerable and roll the dice on side effects).

Meanwhile, allow me to take on our local rag’s wrist wringing, point by point:

  • Deaths with Covid never have been separated from deaths BY Covid. That shell game certainly suggests “inflated” data points. Same goes for “cases”.
  • With the sudden shift — by the Fauci-ites — to the new conventional wisdom that cloth masks are ineffective compared to the N95 cone masks, little wonder precautions have been “scoffed at”. Normal people knew the face diapers were symbolic signals of virtue from the start.
  • Schools are struggling to stay open because administrators continue to “test to stay” among asymptomatic kids. And, furthermore, there is outright denial that the vaccinated are at least as vulnerable to Omicron as the unvaxed across all age groups.
  • Beware the next wave that “comes along”? Omicron, say credible members of the medical community (when not censored), is nature’s vaccine. It will drive herd immunity. Why would you dwell on the threat of a “next one”? How about the next killer, three-inch snow storm, or the next routine flu season? Best hunker down inside your bunkers on Pennsylvania Avenue.
  • This is an “unchecked and ignored” pandemic? Citizens have had every aspect of normal life taken from them. Replaced by: Masks. Social distancing. Gloves. Vaccines. Boosters. Denial of therapeutic drugs to promote recovery. Travel restrictions. Unchecked? What a very Australian point of view.
  • Masks are awesome. Quit saying they equate to “child abuse”. The consequences of masking children will not be known for years. If it is not abusive it certainly is dangerous. Many experts believe it is inhibiting speech development in the very young. How could it not?

This just in. 2020 phoned The Pilot’s newsroom. It wants its hysteria back.
